The Burial Project

The Burial Project is a 30-year effort to explore the hugely diverse ways that different cultures create and design burial grounds. People everywhere have ideas about how the grave sites of their departed loved ones should be arranged, decorated and designed.  Those design ideas carry over into the cemetery as a whole, because of culture, geography or physical limitations. I find it fascinating to visit cemeteries around the world and see not only how grave marker styles are different from one place to another, but also to be given a glimpse into the lives of those who lived in these places decades or even centuries before us. I am interested not only in creating images that honor the people buried in these places, but also in exploring the burial places as landscapes themselves. Those landcscapes can be beautiful in their own right; where a natural scenic landscape photograph can show off a place of great inherent beauty, a cemetery can invoke a real sense of peace. I hope these photographs provide you with enjoyment, peace and tranquility.
